First Event
Get in the Draw
Budget: $1,190–$2,040
💡 Saddle first. Saddle bronc is the most equipment-intensive rough stock event. Get the saddle sorted before buying anything else — it's 50–60% of your total investment and the decision that affects everything else.
Bronc Saddle
No horn, rigging-plate for flank strap, specific PRCA dimensions required. Seat size and tree quality are critical — a mismatch throws your balance from the first jump. Buy used for your first season; test the tree by squeezing the fork and cantle — no flex allowed.

Bronc Rein + Halter Set
A single rein attached to a bronc-specific halter — used for balance, not steering. Your rein hand movement is a major scoring component. Standard 6–7 ft length. Must be bronc-specific; a standard western halter won't work. Buy as a matched set to start.

Mid$130–$200
Pro$250–$400+
Bronc Spurs
Different from bull riding — rowels must spin freely, not locked. Larger, duller rowels than other events. Wide heel bands keep the spur in position. Your spurring style directly affects your score; the equipment must match your technique.

Competition Chaps
Leather only — no synthetics at competition level. Serve dual purpose: leg protection and judged presentation. Fit at the hip, not the leg. Buy off-the-shelf for your first season; get custom-fitted after you know your riding style (first custom pair runs $300–$600).

Tall Top Riding Boots
16–18 inch shaft required — not short western boots. Hard, smooth leather soles (not rubber). Spur placement and heel position affect your score. Buy one size smaller than normal; leather stretches significantly with use.

Protective Vest (Rough Stock)
Not required at all events but worn by the majority of competitors — rib fractures are common in saddle bronc. Must be rough stock designation (not a barrel racing vest). ASTM F1731 certification preferred. Same fit rules as bull riding: snug, not loose.

New Custom-Fit Saddle
After 1–2 seasons on a used saddle, you'll know exactly what seat size and tree shape fits your riding. A custom-built or carefully selected new saddle will noticeably improve consistency. This is the upgrade that matters most.
$1,100–$2,500+
Custom-Fitted Chaps
After your first season you'll understand what fit and style work best for your riding. Custom chaps are fitted to your proportions and can dramatically improve your presentation score. First pair runs $300–$600.
$300–$700+
Spare Rein + Halter
Competition riders carry a backup set. Equipment failure at an event with no spare means a scratch. Keep a second matched set in your bag once you're competing consistently.

5 Mistakes First-Time Buyers Make
01
Buying short western boots. Tall shaft boots (16–18") are non-negotiable for spur position. Short boots are the single most common beginner equipment mistake in saddle bronc.
02
Buying a new saddle before knowing their riding style. Start with a quality used saddle. After 1–2 seasons you'll know exactly what you need — and you won't waste $1,500+ on the wrong fit.
03
Testing the saddle tree after buying. Test it before — squeeze the fork and cantle hard. Any flex means a cracked tree. A cracked tree can't be fixed, and buying a broken saddle is money gone.
04
Using spinning rowels locked. Bronc spurs are the opposite of bull riding — rowels must spin freely. Locked rowels in saddle bronc are illegal and get you disqualified.
05
Buying a standard western halter instead of a bronc halter. The halter is bronc-specific — different ring placement, different weight. Using the wrong type is a DQ. Buy a matched bronc rein + halter set.
