PRCA, PBR, and NHSRA all require protective vests in sanctioned competition. These aren't arbitrary rules โ they're written in response to real injury data. Beyond competition requirements, there's the practical reality: bull riding is the most dangerous discipline in rodeo. A bull's hoof weighs 15โ20 pounds and hits at the force of the animal's body weight behind it. Getting stepped on without a vest is not a survivable outcome in the way people imagine โ it's not "that would hurt." It's potentially fatal. A vest does not eliminate risk. It moves the damage from catastrophic to recoverable.
Even at practice events and jackpot rodeos, wearing your vest is the standard practice. It's not optional among experienced riders โ it's just what you wear. If you don't have one, you don't ride.
A bull riding vest protects the front of your torso โ ribs, sternum, and the soft tissue around your internal organs. The critical zones are the upper chest (where a bull's hoof typically lands during a ride), the sides (if the bull steps on you laterally), and the lower ribs (from contact during dismount or from the bull rolling on you after you've come off).
Front panels are the primary protection. Most vests are designed for front impact โ which is correct for bull riding because the chest faces forward when you're riding. The best vests also have back panel coverage, which matters if you're kicked from behind or if you land on your back during a fall.
Key anatomy at risk: the sternum (breastbone) โ it can fracture on a direct hoof impact even through a vest, but without one the energy goes straight through. The floating ribs (11 and 12) โ the most commonly broken ribs in bull riding because they're not attached to the sternum and absorb energy without structural support. What a vest does not do: It does not protect your neck, your face, your extremities, or your spine. A vest is not a full-body protector. It's specifically chest and torso impact protection. You still need a helmet, which is a separate piece of required gear.

Impact absorption type: The two main constructions are closed-cell foam and air-cell. Closed-cell foam (EVA or dual-density foam) is consistently rated, doesn't require maintenance, and handles repeated impacts better than most people expect. Air-cell vests use pockets of air that compress on impact โ they offer excellent single-impact absorption but some riders worry about long-term durability. Both are accepted in sanctioned competition. For a first vest, foam-based construction is the more practical choice.
Panel coverage: Full front panel coverage is standard. Front and back panel coverage (full-wrap) is the better option โ you'll find it on mid-range and premium vests. A vest that only covers the front leaves your back exposed during falls. If you're riding competitively, front+back panels are worth the upgrade.
Side panels and flexibility: Rigid side panels that don't move are a real problem โ bull riding requires upper body mobility, and a vest that locks you in place makes the ride harder. Look for flexible side panels that allow your ribcage to expand and rotate. Test any vest by moving your arms through a full range of motion before you buy it.
Strap system: Most vests use a combination of shoulder straps, side straps, and a waist buckle. The key fit point is the waist strap โ it should sit at the lower ribcage, not at the belt line, and it should be tight enough that the vest doesn't shift when you move. A vest that rides up during the ride has left the zone of protection.
Weight: Lighter isn't automatically better. A vest that's so light it has minimal impact material isn't protecting you. The sweet spot for a competition vest is 1.5โ2.5 lbs total weight. At that weight, you have real protection without being weighed down in the chutes.
Break-in period: Every new vest needs to be broken in. The foam layers compress and conform to your body over the first few rides. Don't judge how a vest fits after one use โ put in 5โ10 rides before assessing long-term comfort. That said, it should be comfortable from the first wear. If it's painful to put on, it's the wrong size.
Understanding vest certifications is the difference between buying a vest that actually protects you and buying a vest that looks the part but doesn't meet competition requirements. The certifications exist for a reason โ they represent tested impact performance.
ASTM F2671: This is the standard specification for bull riding and rough stock protective vests. It specifies minimum impact absorption requirements for chest protection. Any vest sold as competition-grade should meet ASTM F2671. When you buy, confirm the vest explicitly lists ASTM F2671 compliance โ if it only says "meets safety standards" without naming the specification, ask for clarification.
SEI (Safety Equipment Institute): SEI is the independent testing body that certifies equipment against ASTM standards. When a vest is SEI-certified, it means an independent lab tested it and confirmed it meets the ASTM requirements. SEI certification is required for NHSRA (high school rodeo) and is the standard most state rodeo associations use as their compliance baseline.
PRCA/PBR compliance: These organizations specify that vests must meet ASTM requirements โ they don't maintain their own certification standard. If a vest is SEI-certified to ASTM F2671, it meets PRCA and PBR requirements. The certification tag on the vest (usually inside the collar or on a side panel) should show the standard it meets.
What "ASTM-rated" actually means: It means the manufacturer tested the vest against a specific ASTM standard. Look for the standard number. "ASTM-rated" without a standard number is marketing language โ it could mean anything. A vest that meets ASTM F2671 will say so explicitly in the product description, and it will have a SEI certification tag inside the vest.
A vest that doesn't fit correctly doesn't protect you. Fit is not a preference โ it's a performance requirement. Here's how to get it right.
How to measure: Chest โ wrap a tape around the widest part of your chest, under your arms, at the level of your nipples. Waist โ wrap it around your natural waist (at the lower ribcage, not your belt line โ this is where the vest sits). If you're between sizes, size up. A slightly loose vest that doesn't shift is better than a tight one that restricts breathing.
Fit test in the store or on delivery: Fasten all straps. Raise your arms above your head โ the vest should stay in position and not ride up past your lower ribs. Reach forward as if you're holding a bull rope โ the vest should not restrict your shoulder rotation. Take five deep breaths โ you should be able to breathe fully without the vest compressing your chest. If it feels tight at the sternum in the resting position, it's the wrong size.
Break-in effect: New vests feel stiff. The foam layers compress and conform over 5โ10 rides. A vest that's snug but not painful when new will fit well after break-in. A vest that's painful when new is wrong. Don't plan to "break in" a vest to fit โ if it doesn't fit when you put it on, return it.
Position on your body: The bottom edge of the vest should sit at your lower ribcage, not at your waist. The front panels should cover your sternum and the upper portion of your ribs. The back panels should reach the same level. If the vest sits too high (exposing your lower ribs) or too low (leaving your upper chest exposed), it's the wrong size.

Entry-level doesn't mean poor protection. At this tier you're getting competition-legal coverage from brands like Phoenix and Rough Riders. The foam is adequate for regular competition use.
The sweet spot for most competitors. At this tier you're getting full-wrap protection with better materials and fit. Brands like Equisafe, Phoenix Pro, and similar mid-range lines hit this range.
Professional and top amateur competitors typically run premium vests. The air-cell construction handles the repeated heavy impacts that come with frequent competition. If you're riding every weekend, this is worth the investment.
The most widely used vest brand in bull riding at the amateur and semi-pro level. If you're not sure what to buy, a Phoenix is the right starting point.

Protective vests are designed for single-event impact absorption. After a hard hit โ especially a direct hoof strike โ the foam compresses and doesn't fully recover. Completely different impact profiles. Football and hockey pads are designed for repeated, lower-force impacts spread across a game or practice. A bull riding vest is designed for single high-force impacts โ the kind a 1,200-pound animal delivers in a single kick or crush. The foam density, panel design, and certification standards are specific to rodeo rough stock. Do not use a football or hockey vest for bull riding โ it is not designed for this application and will not provide adequate protection.
No. The impact forces in saddle bronc are lower than in bull riding โ you're more likely to fall from a height than to be stepped on โ but the same vest works for both disciplines. Many roughstock competitors use the same vest for bull riding and saddle bronc. If you compete in both, one vest that meets ASTM F2671 covers both events.
Three to five years with regular use, depending on how frequently you compete. Inspect your vest annually: check the foam for compression, the straps for wear, and the certification tag for legibility. After any significant impact event, inspect it immediately. If the foam shows permanent compression (a visible indent where it was hit), replace the vest. Below $100, be suspicious of the certification โ some non-certified vests are marketed as "riding vests" without meeting ASTM standards. Don't buy non-certified even if the event you're entering doesn't explicitly check โ it's your body on the line.
Only if you can confirm its condition and history. A used vest may have invisible impact damage โ the foam compresses and doesn't recover, and you can't see it from the outside. If you're buying used, ask the previous owner about impact events. If the previous owner can't confirm the vest has never taken a significant hit, don't buy it. You cannot inspect foam compression by looking at the surface. Buying used saves money; buying used from an unknown history is a gamble with your safety.
Custom vests make sense for riders who compete frequently (weekly or more) and have a confirmed multi-year commitment to the sport.
